Using Stumble Upon to get quick traffic boosts. However not a good tool for conversions.

If you are looking for a quick way to boost traffic to your website or blog is by “liking” your site on stumble upon. Lets first take a brief look at how stumble upon actually works.

You will need:
FireFox or Internet Explorer installed and ready to use
A stumble upon account
The Stumble Upon plugin for FireFox or Internet Explorer installed
You are logged into your Stumble account via the plugin.

While you were setting up your stumble upon account you would have gone through and selected a bunch of categories that you like or can connect with. Some of the one I have chosen is Music, Movies, Technology and various other geeky topics. Those will be used to serve up websites to you. If you click the stumble button it will take you to a random website with a topic you choose in one of the many categories you selected. Now that you are at this site what do you do? You can either like it or dislike it. The more you do this the smarter the stumble engine becomes at serving up very specialized content for you.

If you find a site that you like and that site is not already in the system it will ask you to choose a category to place that site in, add in some keywords and then write a brief review of the site.

Now that everyone has a 30,000 foot view of how the stumble system works. Lets take a look at how can this simple tool drive traffic to your site or blog.

A static non frequently changing website
First we will start with those of you who have a website that has static content that does not change daily or very often. The best way to start is just start at your home page and work your way around the site “liking” all of the pages add it to a category, choosing the proper keywords, and writing up a short description of each page. Depending on the keywords and the category you select you might start to see traffic show up relatively quickly. It could be as soon as 20 minutes or as long as a week there is no way to predict that. Now that your site is in the stumble upon directory ask your friends, neighbors, coworkers and anyone else to navigate to your site and do the same thing. The more people who “like” your site the more it will be served up in its category and for its keywords.

A blog or frequently updated website.
The strategy for this type of site is the same as above however you just need to make sure that for every blog post and or page added you continue to “like” each new page or post. You will start to see a traffic trend based upon when you make an update or blog post and then “like” right away. It is easier to keep up with it if you like them right away and not try to do a whole grouping of them at once.

With all of that said there is no guarantee that this traffic will turn into a conversions, steady traffic, repeat traffic or even a click on your ads. This technique is to get your web site’s name out to as many people as possible and start creating brand recognition. If your site has good content and provides a good or service that people like this technique is a great way to introduce it to new people.
